How do i install nvidia drivers for ubuntu 14.04

I've never had any problem installing the drivers directly from NVidia, and I like to use the latest ones. (Those ones via the Ubuntu Repositories are fairly dated.) There's nothing magic about package managers, and as long as you are not trying to install software from an external source that has already been installed via a package manager you should have zero problems.

But sure, if you are happy with older drivers, you can install them from Ubuntu rather than NVidia.

Keep in mind that most of the users asking questions here do not have the same skillset as you, I, or other more advanced users and cannot get themselves out of the holes that going outside the package manager will (eventually) dig.

And, latest drivers are not always the best choice, especially with 2 generation old video cards.

I give what I believe to be the best answers. I'm quite happy for you to disagree with me but I think you should perhaps be more diplomatic than to use pejorative terms like "right way" or "wrong way".

Spoonfeeding is one technique in dealing with people, education is another. So let's all just give our answers without grandiose claims that we are "right" and let the questioner decide which advice to follow.

Just my opinion.

ive tried both and they both havent worked. When i go into steam and launch games straight away it comes up with an error saying video initialization error"

Games playing, using Steam, on Linux is another matter; personally I am not convinced that it is yet ready for the big time so I stick to Windows for games. I suspect that your problem lies with the OpenGL library but that is not something that I have any great experience with. You may want to look at the Steam forums.

What do you see when you look at the "Additional Drivers" dialog?

It sounds like the Nouveau driver is still in use.

You may have to blacklist it: http://askubuntu.com/questions/481414/install-nvidia-driver-instead-nouveau
