I overclocked my i5 760 from 2.8 GHz to 3.8 GHz and tested it on prime95, I adjusted the voltages as well. I thought it was all running fine noe cores were stopped... So play and game and it was left to render over night... I wake up to find that the computer is restarting itself and can't get past the loading OS part before it was forced to restart... Did I mess up my CPU or something else?

I left it on over night the tempertures were into the 80C but the computer didn't shut itself down, I'm using a closed loop water cooled system as well I've tryed under clcoking to 2.16 GHz but that doesn't work either

So if it was fried, would it not be able to get through the bios screen? I'm new to overrclcoking, but followed a tutorial on it... Also it is water cooled, I mean if I unscrewed the water block from the cpu, would the liquid go every were

You may have corrupted your windows install try running start up repair if you have a bootable disc or SFC_ /scannow or chkdsk_ /f from safe mode cmd prompt .

note : If you are using win 7 you can make a startup repair disk on another working win 7 PC
To create a system repair disc

Open Backup and Restore by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Backup and Restore.

In the left pane, click Create a system repair disc, and then follow the steps. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.more:

.

oh don't forget to remove the OC and overvolt in your bios first

CPU should be OK if it posts if it was fried it wouldn't post fried MB *usually won't post either .

Don't worry if you ruined you CPU I doubt your PC would start. I believe it's nessisary for you CPU to work to get data from your ROM to even try and boot. I have to agree with the other people who have posted, it seems like a very unstable overclock. I'd return your base frequency to it's default. You should monitor your temps, it seems unlikely at this point but a 1000mhz overclock would probably put quite a bit of stress on most processors and not to mention raise you CPU temps by quite a bit. Anyway way that enough speculation, I bet if you clock back to 2.8 ghz you'll find you PC will boot. Hopefully this is helpful!

I don't think is fried, if so, then it wouldn't even pass the POST, try to run recovery on your windows installation or try to boot something else like a live Ubuntu USB/CD just to discard hardware damage.

I agree with a few others, to rule out hardware damage unplug all devices and remove the battery from the motherboard for a few minutes. After it is reset to default, attempt to boot. If you boot but have problems try an OS repair. While your battery is unplugged remove all but one stick of RAM and all other non-essential components and peripherals and boot in safe mode. If that is successful then do a normal boot. Then one by one add in components starting with RAM and finally the same with peripherals. Doing something as technical as an OC requires your constant attention. I'm kind of new to OC myself but I have quite a bit of experience with diagnosing hardware issues. I hope this helps.

I had the same issue where my computer would keep resetting itself once it reached the loading screen of the is. After testing all my hardware, the cpu was the last thing that I did not test, so I replaced the cpu and everything worked perfectly again.

I agree with some of the others here . I would look to resetting the OC & voltage to stock and resetting the BIOS defaults before thinking about an CPU, a fried *as a rule CPU wont POST U get nothing but black and no curser. A GPU cant draw < anything > to the screen without a CPU .

If that doesent fix it a sytem file check ( SFC ) from an elevated command in safe mode or from a startup repair disc and maybe a " chkdsk_/r " cmd whereas R implies /f also to repair any corrupted files SFC might miss .........or just run a start up repair boot disk ......do each one 3 times or until it is fixed within that .
Do the " sfc_/scannow first " on the syst drive .

An unstable overclock can corrupt windows system files in a minute . You can also make a startup repair disk from another PC and use that at least 3 times or more until Windowes loads if it sees your OS .

As a last resort If you are on win 7 or maybe even 8.1 you can *maybe boot into safe mode* and try a system restore from your recovery partition after you re set the BIOS and OC if those things dont fix it .

Sounds like your problem is in Windows mabe just a corrupt Windows syst .32 file or Win .ini boot loader more than a CPU.

If you cant fix it do a hdd diag /fix ( long test ) from a Western Digital Lifeguard or Sea Tools boot disk or maybe a clean or repair install before you think about a CPU .

FWIW WD lifegaurd works on Seagate and WD hdd's but not the other way around an Linux Ubuntu live boot disk will work also they have good drive tools .
And no ur water block doesent "wet " the CPU litteraly it just tranfers heat out of it as long as the liquid cooler lines are connected coolant wont escape ☻☻

FWIW IMO a 1Ghz OC on *that* CPU is pushing it way too hard IIRC those things arent quite up to that
OTOH at stock speeds they might compare to a Sandybridge i3 which isnt altogether bad at all .
