How long will I be "Maxing Out" Games for with the 980 ( 1080p )

How long will i be maxing out games for on a 1080p monitor with the 980 (More specifically the Galax GTX 980 HOF). Am I better of with an R9 295x2? I dont want to SLI / Crossfire although I dont mind dual cards, for example the asus mars 760x2 or, the r9 295x2.
I have an i7 4790k.
Also how long would I be maxing out games on the r9 295x2 for? Just a note: I do play a lot of those un-optimized games / games still in early alpha, so higher specs are required but my main game is Battlefield 4.

Just so you know though, the Dual GPU cards are essentially two GPU's in SLI/Xfire (in the case of 295x, it's two 290x's Xfired on the same PCB, and in the case of 760x2, two 760's SLI'ed on the same PCB).

That being said, in the past year, I feel game requirement have suddenly jumped up (it could very well be due to bad porting and/or coding), so 295x should be usable for several years, maxing out I have suspicion it won't, since it isn't maxing every game at the moment, and there are games to come that it won't max out.

YMMV

EDIT: In pure performance, a 980 is weaker than a 295x, so on its own, a 980 will probably last less than 295x

What games couldnt it max out? (Apart from AC : Unity)

AC:U can't be maxed out, but it's badly coded for Xfire, it doesn't work, at all, in the current version.

Also The Witcher 3 coming out next year is slated to break all requirements, so there is a good chance that 295x won't be able to run it at max.

(After looking back, I actually realised how badly misinformed my comment was).

I think he means at 4k its maxing out games and reaching its full potential almost.

Well, Far Cry 4 is the most requirement intensive game at the moment and the r9 295x2 is basically 2 r9 290x in one, and considering far cry 4 needs one r9 290x reccomended then I should be fine for a while, right?

Actually I don't think it was 4k (I don't think of it as a mainstream gaming resolution), but more in line with 1440p and 1080p......

Then I realised I have somewhat misremembered...

295x on its own should max out almost, if not all, games released before AC:U at those resolutions.

295x will last for some time, but... as a Pessimistic as I am, if AC:U, FC4 and DA:I are of any accurate indication of game requirements, I think the currently available hardware might struggle with latest released earlier than expected.

However, whether those are exceptions or rules for the future, I don't know.

My gtx 780ti is able to run Ac unity on ultra at 1080 at 58fps average. I dont see how 295x2 is struggling.
