OS to SSD, not enough unallocated space

I have been trying to move Windows 8.1 from my HDD to my SSD without cloning or anything, I simply want to move the OS to the SSD.
When using AOMEI, I click 'migrate OS to SSD', but it says there is not enough unallocated space available, even though my SSD is 256GB
it says I will need 309GB of space and i don't know what to do
Please advise.

Solution
You can't fit 309GB into a 256GB drive.

By far, the best way forward is a clean install of the OS on the SSD.

If you really, really, really want to go down that clone route, you will have to uninstall a bunch of stuff to get below 200GB.
Then clone and hope it works.
Then discover it doesn't, and try to fix that.
Spend a few days, post back here as to why it failed....
Eventually fix it.
Then do all the reinstall of the applications that you had to uninstall to make it fit.
Then see the performance is not quite right, because the settings are different for an SSD vs HDD.

Or, just do a clean install of the OS on the new drive, and know it works from the start.

I'm not even going to get into how to fix this problem, the plain and simple of it is you should never (NEVER) move the OS from an HDD to a SSD. It will almost never work properly. I suggest moving all applications first, then reinstall the OS onto the SSD.

OK then, can anyone set out step by step how to do it the best way. I checked a bunch of tutorials and they mostly seem too advanced for my understanding. I have Acronis true image 2014. Also the OS came pre-installed so I don't have a disk or anything.

Clean install on the new SSD

Find and save all the relevant drivers to a USB or DVD
Get the Windows 8.1 install file here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
Burn to DVD or USB stick.
Have ONLY the SSD connected.
Install
Install drivers as needed
Let Windows run all its updates. This may take a day or two
Verify the SSD is first in the boot order
Once it is all working, now reconnect the HDD
Now reinstall your applications.

Yes, it sounds like a lot of work. But it is actually easier than trying to squeeze 309GB of stuff onto a 256GB drive.
