A working i7 2670QM and a broken Inspiron

I have broken my inspiron but the cpu is still working. I already had a problem with limitation of ram in my inspiron(8gb) since I need 16 gb. Is there any way to use my core i 7 2670QM on a motherboard that supports 16 gb of ram? As far as I know, I can not use a PC desktop motherboard, so somehow I need to buy a new motherboard and the other parts as well. Any ideas to use this cpu with 16 gb of ram?

Thank you!

So you believe it doesn't worth it to build a new one with 2670? In this case, how much do you think I can sell it and how much it costs to build a new pc, if I buy the pieces by myself?

What does a similar one sell for on ebay?

■ Depends. The motherboards to use mobile CPUs is a little harder to find and they tend to be more expensive then I would like. You can probably sell the CPU more than a $100 as it's genuine and the same with the broken laptop as parts. there are a lot of similar CPUs priced in $100 plus that have not been bought. You'll probably have to price it low to sell.

Building any computer will cost more than you pay for the qm67 qm77 motherboard. Plus they will be weaker than tgen 2670QM CPU.

In a budget standpoint reusing the 2670 allows you to use the least money.

So if I can find a motherboard, it would be cheaper, but its hard to find such a motherboard. ANother question is I don't want to (re) buy the same motherboard. because the ram support is limited to 8 gb. I need a motherboard with at least 16 gb ram support. What do you suggest?

reusing the cpu costs me a new motherboard. Otherwise, I need to buy wole parts for a pc. power, motherboard, monitor etc if I could successfully sell old cpu and buy a new pc cpu . right?

Depending on how much you pay for the QM67 or QM77 it would be cheaper. Why? Because OP can re use the RAM, HDD. Depending if the motherboard has a mobile screen connection then the laptop screen can be reused. Addionally you can't build a PC close to the power of the 2670QM with anything cheap AMD or Intel has to offer.

Only reason not to build off of the 2670 is due to mediocre support.

I agree that the easier route is selling the mobile parts.

Reusing the CPU also gets you limited RAM possibilities with a motherboard of that level.
It is your choice as to how you move forward.

You might find a different board that can handle more RAM. Is this in a laptop?

Yes. a 17" dell inspiron.

Then you are almost completely out of luck.
You want to find a different motherboard, that fits in that laptop case, that will also handle 16GB.
What is available from Dell? Or ebay?

you are saying that building on 2670 is hard but cheaper, building a pc that works as good as 2670 is easier but expensive. How much it costs for me to build a cheapest pc with 16 gb of ram that can work as good as a 2670?

I don't really care about the mobility. It doesn't matter if it's a laptop or desktop. I just need a system with a cpu as good as -or better-2670 and 16 gb of ram. graphic and HDD is not that much important.

Indeed, bad luck! Do you mean what kind of motherboard? I didn't check yet.

Do you not understand that there are Mini-ITX motherboards for Intel Mobile iX processors? They are the same form factor as the desktop motherboards and they fit in Desktop cases... Nothing to do with buying a motherboard that will 'fit' in a laptop case.

Yes I do. He apparently currently has a laptop.
If he were going to go to a mini-ITX that works with that, he needs case, PSU, etc.

He was initially looking for u=just a motherboard.

Okay I'll give a few examples of motherboards that you are looking for. Easiest thing to do is type QM67 or QM77 on eBay or Google. You can add motherboard in the search criteria if you want. The reason why I stopped recommending you go the 'reuse 2670qm' way is because the motherboards are more expensive then they were a few months ago.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Emerson-GALA-MITX-CORE-820-Mini-ITX-Motherboard-QM67-Express-chipset-SS2-R-/351276548236?pt=Motherboards&hash=item51c9b6c08c

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SuperMicro-X9SCV-Q-Motherboard-Socket-G2-Intel-QM67-DDR3-SATA3-Mini-ITX-/321164541367?pt=Motherboards&hash=item4ac6e5fdb7

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jetway-NF9G-QM77-Intel-Socket-G2-Core-Mobile-DualLAN-Mini-ITX-Gen2-Daughterboard-/131286091790?pt=Motherboards&hash=item1e9142c80e

The first motherboard is the cheapest but only supports 8GB of RAM, out the window. The other two supports 16GB of RAM (2x8GB) but are much more expensive. At $199 for a basic motherboard I would rather spend more money on building a desktop honestly. Reasons are that these QMXX motherboards don't exist that much and there must be a reason why there is even less for the newer Intel processors. Even with these motherboards you will still need a Desktop case, unless you want to run it out in the open. Additionally finding heatsink compatibility will be hard (I haven't really looked).

.:edit:.

These Mini-ITX boards don't support normal power supplies and nor do they use as much power as full Desktop computers. Majority of these motheboards come with an power-adapter that suppose to power the motherboard and system.

Correct...I was looking for a motherboard that supports 16 gb of ram for my laptop. But now, if I can reuse the cpu and build a pc with >= 16 gb ram.

No no, not just any mini-ITX motherboard. You will need a QM67 or QM77 socket/chipset motherboard. It's just that all of those motherboards are mini-ITX based. Super-Micro, MSI are two brand that have these motherboards and are mostly only available through eBay. They also cost approximately $200 which is a lot for a simple motherboard. You will need to get ahold of any desktop case, a cooler for the CPU, keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

Humm...not easy at all but easier than selling my cpu for a good price though...right?
