Can the Asus R510DP / X550DP laptop motherboard support 16GB of RAM?

I upgraded my R510DP (AMD A10 CPU) with a 1TB Samsung EVO 850 SSD and a 16GB Kingston HyperX kit.

It was running the latest version of the BIOS and Ubuntu 14.04 server. Everything was working great for a while, through numerous reboots. The BIOS recognized all devices and the full amount of RAM. Then I put a password on the BIOS and the screen went black. It powers up and sees the battery. Sometimes sees the hard drive, sometimes not.

I went back to the original 8GB RAM kit and hard drive... even replaced the touchpad ribbon cable which looked a bit messed up. No joy. Any ideas?

According to spec, that laptop supports a max of 8GB. I wasn't able to find any anecdotal evidence that others have successfully run 16GB, which is usually a good indicator that the spec is correct.

Try shutting it down, unplug the power supply, remove the battery, then press and hold the power button down for a long 5-count. Press and hold 3 or 4 times. Then hook it back up and see if that fixes it.
