So recently I've been pondering the choice between the i7 4790k and the i5 4690k.. I thought I was sold on the i7 when the site I like to order from (directcanada close to me and free shipping) ended their sale on the 4690k. However, the i5 has gone on sale once again there for $250 CAD. Coupled with my Asus z97-A Mobo+Tax it brings the total cost of the CPU+Mobo to approx. $450, the i7 4790k (could only find on newegg) after shipping+tax runs me up about $430. For this reason I'm kinda leaning toward the i5. What's your guys personal opinions? Will the i7 perform that much better than the i5? I play games like BF4(my main game), Shadow of Mordor, CoD AW, DA:I etc. I don't feel it's enough to constitute the price tag. And although the hyperthreading is tempting, I will be mostly gaming on my PC as I have a laptop for school/programming. (I also feel with a CPU that expensive I'd be more weary of overclocking). I am hoping the 4690k will get better performance in BF4 than my 8350, and similar performance to the 4790k (I know it'll be a little weaker)

Also in the future I could see myself picking up another 290x to run SLI or perhaps selling my 290x and grabbing 2 970's. Would the 4690k be enough to run 2 290x's or 970s? (I have a 850W B2 PSU)

What would get better gaming performance:
R9 290x + i7 4790k + Asus Z97-A
or
2x R9 290x + i5 4690k + Asus Z97-A

Is the i5 easily overclocked? Ideally I'd like to get a stable OC at 4.4-4.5ghz (I understand every chip is different, but is this a realistic number to expect?). I will likely be running a Noctua D14/15 (depending what I can get my hands on) with 5 case fans (2x 140mm front intake 2x 120mm top exhaust and 1x 120mm rear exhaust) which I hope is enough cooling.

Last but not least what would you choose? I will be making my final decision by tomorrow and ordering parts so I will have them by the end of the week.

Once again I look forward to all the help this community continues to provide.

Sold, thank you sir. And yes I am mostly worried about gaming performance, I'm sure the i5 will also be able to handle whatever I throw at it since it's not like I'll be frequently 3D rendering or rendering videos in which the i7 would excel.

Quickly I must order the parts before I change my mind! :p

Yeah I purchased the 8350 a month ago and it performs fine, but the extra cores didn't seem as beneficial to me and I figured I'd test out the intel waters see which I prefer. Luckily found someone to pick up my mobo and CPU for $350 so I only gotta shell out about $50 to make the switch! :)

And looking at motherboards which would you recommend between these 2: Asus Z97-A, and Gigabyte Z97 Gaming-5? For overclocking+gaming?
