Hey i would like to know which one is better.

i will be gaming mainly with a little bit of recording here and there.
i have a GTX 660 Msi gaming and i would like to know whats better.
and if it is worth overclocking the CPU.

and i would like to know does this MOBO have overclocking enabled.
MSI B85-G43-Gaming ATX Motherboard
Does that mobo allow OCing and does it take Devil Canyon CPUS

Thanks Guys in advanced

No you cannot OC on a b85 motherboard with an i5/i7 cpu. They are just not built to handle that kind of power.

As far as which is better, the answer is both. The i5 is 5th gen Intel, so has a few more instruction sets, and since it only runs 4 cores, generally runs cooler than an i7 running 8 cores. Most games there is little if any difference between an i5 and an i7, as most games don't use more than 4 cores anyways. Only games like BF4 which are optimized for 8 core usage will see a definite benefit. When it comes to things like rendering etc, that's where an i7 shines over the i5, the i7 having a higher base clock, and 8 cores vrs 4. The downside being heat generated.

If prices were the same, I'd take the i7, but the value winner is the i5 hands down, that extra $100 is better spent on a better gpu.

Yeah fair enough. i think ill go with i5, because i can only buy from one store but if i can find a new mobo at this other store im looking at the i7 is $30 cheaper for a sale

The b85 chipset will probably work with either, but will need the bios flashed since they weren't designed for the devil's canyon chips. Whether or not you can update the bios without one of the original cpu's plugged in I'm not sure. Some have to be updated with the older cpu installed first, others allow for updating via flash drive.

Whether or not you can overclock on the b85, you might be able to. Even if you are it's liable not to be much value since you won't be able to overclock it like you would on a chipset made for it. It can be hard on the motherboard, pushing it past its' intended limits.

I'm not sure if it's purely price, if everyone already has b85 and h81 motherboards or what the aversion is to moving to a z97 motherboard made for devil's canyon chips. In the end it may work, it may not. For less headache I prefer to go with what's made for it, be able to just put the cpu in and go without all the tinkering.

No. This is wrong. Intel has not released their 5th gen cpus(Broadwell) yet. The i5s are also do not run any cooler than the i7. The i7 are quad core cpus with hyperthreading tech so they can run 8 threads at a time. That does not make them 8 core cpus.

Z97 motherboards that support SLI are best for overclocking. They'll run you $120+
You can get cheaper Z97 boards, but their overclocking would only be mediocre.
Overclocking is not worth the money. You'd spend at the very least, $100 more to be able to overclock. That money would be better spent elsewhere.

You have not mentioned a budget, but this can't be beat for $240

So you're looking at $70 more right off the bat to be able to overclock, and then you would have to get an after market cooler too.

The same idea holds true no matter where you live.

These are AU prices. The difference is $80+ and you still need a cpu cooler to overclock.

I have a think its called a h100i cpu cooler from my birthday.

If you already have the h100i it will handle an overclocked cpu. Overclocking is like a bonus though, it's not going to make or break an intel cpu. It will improve performance some yes, but it won't be night and day either. Not given a 4690k's stock 3.5 and a max of say 4.5ghz. In that speed range, an extra ghz is icing on the cake but won't blow your socks off either.

Yeah i understand i really wanna OC it to 4.0 just for BF4 and DayZ SA and ARMA 2 DayZ mod since some of the games i play are really CPU heavily so pushing a little will make a difference even if its a extra 10FPS it will make me happy

Not sure you would get 10fps difference between a 3.2ghz i5 4430 and an 4.5ghz overclocked 4690k.

My biggest argument is that you can get a MUCH MUCH MUCH better video card in the same budget by going with a locked i5 like the 4430 or 4440.

An i5 4440 + H97 + 280x would destroy an overclocked i5 4690k + Z97 + 270x

Could be the case but in some games Like DayZ mod which is a CPU game and GFX cards do barley nothing an OC i5 or a stock i5 4590k over my AMD 760K OC at 4.8ghz would make the game run so much
