Processor overheating and shutdown problem

I will try to be as brief as possible in my question, thank you for your time if you read and respond:

About 6 months ago I was having overheating issues and random shutdowns with my laptop (HP g6-2239dx, with AMD A-6 4400m apu), so I took it completely apart and cleaned the fan/heatsink, which needless to say was filthy and causing all of my issues. Once it was cleaned, no more shutdowns. However, at the time I did not realize that thermal paste needed to be applied in between the heatsink and processor, so it has been running with the old thermal paste still on until up until a few 4 days ago. I'm not sure if this has impacted anything, as it was still running cool and dissipating heat fairly well when necessary without a new layer of thermal paste during that time.

I recently got a new battery as well, as mine had been completely dead for a couple of months prior and I was only using the computer on AC power. The new battery is not directly from the manufacturer but it matches the voltage and amperage of the old battery. The computer will work fine on this new battery for sometimes up to hours at a time, but then will shutdown randomly as if the power cord was unplugged. This time, however, on reboot the system does not tell me that it shutdown from overheating, as it did before when it was shutting overheating due to a dirty fan/heatsink.

This lead me to think I was possible having overheating issues again, so I checked the CPU temp with several applications including Speccy and HWmonitor, and all report that the CPU is around 90 degrees Celsius on startup/while idle, and climbs as high as 115 or 120. Through some research I also read about thermal paste and cleaned the old stuff off well, applied a new nice thin layer (dot method) and reseated the heatsink. Now, I am assuming that there is no way that these temps are correct, as the computer is cool to the touch, and the fan does not run very fast (though it does spin and seems to be working properly) when it reports these high temps. When I watch a movie or do something demanding, the fan runs faster and the heatsink seems to dissipate the heat properly.

Additionally, the shutting down does not necessarily happen during high load or when the computer is reporting higher temperatures, and the laptop will NEVER shutoff like this when plugged in, only on the battery.

My thoughts are that I may have damaged the processor during the last 6 months, and the temperature sensor is not reporting correctly? I am confused about his, however, since the shutdowns don't happen only when the computer is reporting high temps, and it reports temperatures above what the manufacturer reports as the max temp before shutdown (100 Celsius). I also obviously suspect something with the battery, since it doesn't shutdown ever when plugged into the wall.

I apologize for the wall of text but wanted to be as thorough as possible. Thank you for your time and help.

To me, that points to a crappy battery.

Any thoughts on the high idle temp readings, but cool to the touch and low fan speeds? The heatsink seems to work properly when it needs to, but it reads 90C while idle. If replacing the battery doesn't work, would it be wise to try to replace the processor and see if the temperatures read normal?

90C at idle is NOT right. At all.
That points to a heat sink not on quite right.
