Issues with new hard drive

Hello everyone!

So I recently built a new computer and my girlfriend got me a 2tb hard drive to put in it. The model number is ST2000DM001 and it refuses to work inside of the computer and with a sata 3 to usb cable. It wont show up when I go into management either. This is the second hard drive that amazon has sent that has done this. Anyone know of a fix? Or is it just another bad hard drive?

Good thing I already had some ssd's on hand it is useable currently and I haven't had an issue with it.

What does disk management show it as? If the drive has already been partitioned, then it needs formatted. Also, is this an internal or external drive? You originally state your girlfriend got you a drive to "put a drive into" a new computer. then you state you are using a USB 3 to USB cable, which doesn't make sense if you're putting the drive in your computer.

If it's an external enclosure, it's possible the enclosure is defective. In this case, try mounting the drive internally (sata) and initialize it from there before putting it back in the enclosure.

It is an internal hard drive I am using a sata 3 to usb cable in order to test the hard drive before I open the pc and put it inside. It is not showing up in disk management at all.
