Games right now don't benefit from having lots of cores, but they do from having strong IPC cores. Games use up to 4 cores, so 4 Intel Haswell cores (from an i5) vs 4 AMD Piledriver cores (any FX) is an easy win for Intel in performance.
FX CPUs may bottleneck some games, so for high end gaming Intel Core i5 is usually the best choice.
