An attempted overclock didn't go well, why?

Well, heres what I have inside my PC:

Motherboard: Asus P6T i7 8 cores.
Graphics Card: XFX r7800 series ghost edition AMD
Case: Obsidian 750D (every fan installed) + extra fan added cooling the motheboard.
Power Supply: ACE 750W BR PSU
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600mhz single stick
HD: x2 SSD 120GB each + 250GB external drive.

Well I tried to overclock her from 2.66 ghz to 3.23gz bit by bit. Everything went well, it booted up worked fine, I went into a game 10 mins later weird smell starts to come out of the PC. I turn it off immediately and reset the settings to default. I have never checked what caused the smell, i tried to figure out but I couldn't. I invited an 'expert' and he said he has no idea what happened neither. I am very white with PCs either way so maybe one of you will know what caused the smell? #quickedit (My temp on 1900 rpm is 36C for the system and every other component stays under 30C or lower. When gaming none of them go above 50C I can test tomorrow for the exact results.)

Why do I want to overclock? Wont hide anything but to boast infront of friends like everyone does. Also the 'expert' advised me to upgrade my ram to 3x4 ram sticks and if possible invest in a new graphics card. Im very curious what you guys think.

Thank you for having a look at this, if you want any more info just write, Im sure i missed a lot of it.

I have your exact motherboard and possibly CPU(i7-920). Your system is approximately 5.5 to 6 years old. While the P6T motherboard overclocks like a champ, the smell could have been one of your electrolytic voltage regulation capacitors bursting/leaking.

I would give the benefit of the doubt to the Asus(motherboard) and look into your power supply for the smell. It appears to be your weakest component in the build.

Don't even sweat the RAM issue. I haven't needed to upgrade from my (3) DDR3 2GB sticks even in the most demanding games. You are only in single channel mode with a single stick but this is the least of your worries right now.

You need to get in there with a good light and make sure you don't see caps like below

There is a line of these capacitors near the edge of the motherboard and near the CPU. Check for any leaking, bulging or already bursted. If the motherboard looks fine then it is likely a issue within the power supply.

Thank you so much for answering that fast!!. The motherboard seems fine I cant see any leaks or any damage being done. I guess you are right about the power supply, it was cheap enough itself, nevertheless im going to have a look at it tomorrow again. If you were to replace the current one with a new one, which one would you advise me to buy? Budget is not really a problem but i dont really want to spend more than 100 euro. Any suggestions?

What he said was "since theres 6 spaces in here and the max capacity is 24GB i suggest you get 3x4 and fill up the 24GB in your own time" Maybe i said it wrong, I meant 3 sticks 4GB each.

The Asus P6T motherboard has a triple channel memory interface. 3 sticks would be very appropriate for this build.
