I am currently looking for an intel i7 4th gen CPU and MOBO to support an SLI setup with 2 MSI GTX 970's. The CPU and GPU need to be able to support of course the 2 GPUs but also either have built in WIFI or be able to support a PCIE 1x card. I have looked at the intel i7 5820k and the i7 470k or 4790k. I would also like the motherboard to have 4 ram slots with a max around 32gb and usb 3.0 header and ports. Ask if you have any other questions. Thanks!

that price range sets you up for an i7-4790k and one of a number of motherboards. the msi gaming 5/7, asus z97-a or maximum vii hero ($210), gigabit z97x-ud*** series are the better gaming boards to go with it. these boards range from about $120 to ~$210. if you want to save some cash you could get the i5-4690k cpu for about $100 less and it will game just as well as the i7.

I know the 4790k only has a max of 16 PCIE slots, would that be able to handle 2 GPUS and an additional 1x card?

no problems there. benchmarks show that sli does not use the whole 16 lanes. the other slots actually have their own lanes and don't usually get mixed into the 3.0 x16 lanes.

think about it this way. we just got more than 16 lanes possible with the new intel 2011-3 cpu's. so until now everyone has always worked with 16 lanes, or less with older cpu's, and sli has been running strong this whole time.

so just to clarify, i will be able to add in a WIFI card in addition to the SLI 970s even with just 16 PCIE lanes?

p.s. I think i will go with the msi 97 gaming 5 for the mobo, thanks for your suggestions! :D

I read on a review on the gaming 7 that it had red LEDs on part of the board, is that the same for the gaming 5?
