Computer freezes to a "NES Style" color splash of hot pinks and other colors

I'm not entirely sure what is causing this but I have some theories. It all started almost a year ago, when my computer would freeze with a pink screen and various other colors. About a month after it started, it some how just fixed itself. It tends to freeze when I have video games running--though it has happened on the desktop and web browsing as well.

Fast forward, it is now doing it all over again. My two computer savvy friends believe it is either a problem with my graphics card, or processor (or maybe my motherboard). But I have no way of actually finding out. I have a warranty on the graphics card so I could get that swapped out. My computer specs are as follows:

Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 945 Processor 3.00 GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 8.00 GB
System type: 64-bit Operating System

Graphics card: GeForce GTX 280

Windows 7 is the operating system

I would post more information if I knew how to acquire it but this is all I know how to share.

One of my friends theorized it was a Windows 7 system update that caused this nearly a year ago, so I had rolled back to a previous update, deleted several gigabytes worth of video games data to try and desperately fix my problem. And I don't remember what I did (if anything) that fixed it but it was fixed--and now it's back again. And I am so worried.

Any help is appreciated, thanks everybody.

I found an old topic on the same thing http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/349059-33-screen-pink-freezes

Your best bet is to get the graphics card looked at while its under warranty. It is probably defective.

Otherwise if you want to check it out yourself one of your friends can probably help you out by plugging in one of their cards to see if a different video card makes a difference.

Get one of your friends to lend you another video card to test if it is the problem.

It looks a little similar to that (in terms of the shade of pink), but the images that are on my screen are totally gone on my computer. In that video you can clearly make out a man standing there on his desktop, whereas on mine it's just random colors.

I just booted up the computer about five minutes ago, and my screen went black in less than a minute upon gaining control of the mouse. Unlike the other times, where I couldn't control the mouse cursor (aka the white square), this time the screen was black with a big white square as my mouse and I could move the square around for about eight seconds before the screen went totally black, and I got the "No Signal" message from my TV itself.

I hope it's just the graphics card then and not something far more serious. You folks think the graphics card is the most likely culprit?
