Geforce GTX 660 running very hot even while playing low-spec games

Hey guys,

Over the past few weeks i've noticed my computer getting very loud while playing games. I've installed MSI afterburner and noticed it's my GPU (Nvidia Geforce GTX 660) that's reaching very high temperatures (86-87 degrees celsius) which is causing it's fan to go crazy.

The weird thing is that my card reaches very high temperatures even when playing a very low-spec game like plague inc. evolved. Or for example when i start up the game Total war: shogun 2, the card reaches temperatures of 87° while just sitting on the main menu. When i play dota 2 on the other hand, the card only reaches temps of about 77° maximum at any given time. When i'm not playing any games the temperature is around 45°.

I use a program called 'nvidia geforce experience' to keep my GPU drivers updated. I've tried dusting out the case but that didn't resolve anything. I haven't cleaned my GPU's fan/heatsink yet though since i'm a bit hesitant of damaging something.

These are my system specs:

OS: windows 8.1 (64bit)
CPU: Intel Core i5-3350P @ 3.10GHz
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 660
RAM: 8GB
SSD: 110GB
Hard drive: 870GB

Any help/ideas/suggestions on this topic would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance!

Solution
Either your case is does not have sufficient cooling (i.e. not enough fans or in a place that doesnt allow airflow) or your card is accumulating dust. Check to see if you need to clean it out.Usually it accumulates right at the fan. You can use some compressed air to blow it out

Be sure the system is off, Be sure you do not spin the fan too fast (I usually hold it), and Be sure to not hold the can upside down or spray too long causing water to form... If it does, wait a while before you apply power.

You can pull out the video card to inspect it or clean it easier. Make sure you stay grounded and touch the edges of the card. I just make sure I always touch the case at all times.

clean your gpu and change the thermal compound also if you have the balls for it. i actually tried doing that on a gtx 650 ti boost and r9 270x, they are still alive until now and i got lower temps compared to when i did not clean and change the thermal paste.

playing farcry 4 on ultra settings and i get max 70 degrees and average 67 degrees. (270x)
playing dota 2 gives me max 66 degrees and a fluctuating 55-65 degrees. (270x)

Hey guys,

i've opened my case, unscrewed my graphics card and tried to pull it out of the motherboard socket but the damned thing won't budge. i've tried looking for a 'lock' but i can only find a little white piece of plastic at the edge of the socket that won't move in any direction. I'm afraid if i pull any harder i might break something.

Thanks a lot guys!

I managed to remove the card and disassemble it / clean out all the components.
Reaching max temps of 63° now while running Shogun 2!

Thanks again :D happy gamer over here!
