how many watts should a power supply have left over for example Ive heard a power supply needs to always be running 50-80% not too much watts left over and not to the point where the power supply is stressing

so if my pc consistently uses 450-480 watts, would a 550w be a good choice

my specs are
-gskill ddr3 8gb
-samsung 840 evo ssd
-radeon r9 280x sapphire
-amd fx 8350 vishera
-asrock 990fx extreme6 AM3+
-old random hdd
-corsair cs550m 550w gold 80+ (not sure about amps and volts dont understand what those are)
using the nzxt phantom 410 has 3 fans all bigger than 120mm

It's unlikely to get a system stressing every component to the max but with the r9 280x you'd be fine with a 550w. I usually look at the relative prices and if there's one that's a little bigger for $5-10 more I go for that since a little extra never hurts. If you already have those parts then stick with it, but if you're putting together a parts list I'd recommend a bit better quality of a power supply than that corsair. Other than a few select larger models, corsair doesn't have the greatest psu's.

Here's a rough guide to give an idea of power supply quality, the best builds for solid performance being tier1, down to the lower tiers. Generally avoiding anything below tier 2 is preferred. That cs model lands in tier3...
