WD 1TB Green makes Startup extremely slow

Hi,
So my PC has a Kingston 120GB SSD and a 1TB WD general storage drive.

Problem: Extremely slow boot times and stays on the Windows 7 boot screen (30 minutes and doesn't even load explorer) when I have the 1TB WD plugged in. When not plugged in, boot times are perfect.

I've had this problem before. I reinstalled windows 7 on SSD and formatted the 1TB WD. Everything worked fine after that. Then a few weeks later it happens again. I'm simply stuck.

Any suggestions?

Solution
The only thing that comes to my mind is that the boot sector still exists on the hard drive and your system is actually booting from that, plus some corruption there. It seems extremely unlikely.

Can you try with a different HDD? If its just that one HDD that causes the problem, maybe a replacement is in order?

Is there a way I could get rid of that boot sector? I've already entered BIOS and disabled a secondary boot device and set my SSD as the only boot device.
Its just strange because it doesn't do it straight away when I formatted it but maybe a few weeks later it suddenly starts having these insanely slow boot times.

Hey there, HayZ!

I'm sorry to see you are struggling with the WD Green drive. :(
I'd suggest to test it using Data LifeGuard diagnostics tool and see how is the health of the HDD: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=qY0Mqz

Another thing you can try to troubleshoot the issue is plugging the HDD with a different SATA cable.
If it doesn't help, I'd strongly recommend contacting our tech support for assistance: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=9c2onG
If your drive is still under warranty, you could RMA the WD Green and get a replacement for it.
Check this link on how to do that: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=or5D6O

Hope I was helpful!

The PC wont boot for me to use the diagnostic tool and I don't have another PC to use except for this Laptop.
It is still under warranty and I've already contacted support to sort that out but I have files on the drive that I want but I'm not sure how to recover them.

I see. Well, in this case you can try a dock station or a SATA-to-USB cable to get the drive detected without having any boot problems. I'm not sure it will work, but I guess you can also try hot-plug the WD Green on your system.

Hot-plug didn't work because as soon as I plug the HHD in the PC becomes slower and the Diagnostics tool can't find any drives. I haven't tried a SATA-to-USB cable yet but I'm going to head over to my local PC world and see what I can find.
Thanks for the advice!

I'll let you know how I get on!

So I went a bought a SATA-to-USB device and still didn't make a difference. I also plugged it into my laptop and it did the exact same thing. My guess is that its faulty and I'll send it off for a replacement.
One problem is that I'm not sure how I'd be able to recover my files from the drive. I'd like to recover them but if its too much effort then I'll just leave it.

Hi again, HayZ!

Well your best chance at this is going to a professional data recovery company for this.
It's not so much an effort as it is pricey, which is why I recommend it only when you have pretty important data on your drive.

I guess data loss is something everybody burned from, sorry that you are going through this though.
I strongly recommend to always keep backups on several locations on-site as well as off-site.

Good luck with the RMA & let me know if there's something else I can help you with! :)
