Higher speed memory should work (although it will run at the lower speed as that is what the CPU supports).

It can cause problems though.

If your not sure the easiest way in my experience is to use the memory compability tool from someone like Crucial memory:

Either use the 'scan' function if on the laptop in question, or use the drop down list to find the make / model and they will give you the correct ram to install. What I'd then recommend doing is sticking the model number they come up with in Google shopping search to find the cheapest vendor :p
