Why do I have to play games on low settings when i exceed the recommended specs?

I recently got a new gaming desktop so that I could actually use the colossal wasteland of games that is my steam library. However after setting up the computer (The software was already installed by the company) i downloaded several games. My PC specs are better than the recommended specs for (let's say...) just cause 2 or Farcry 3: blood dragon. However games such as these are extremely laggy unless i put them on the lowest settings, with the exception of FPS games which don't run smoothly even with the lowest settings. I went to check the Nvidia control panel and that just said my monitor wasn't connected to the graphics card, so now i think that the games are using the on board Intel graphics.

My specs are HERE

If anybody could tell me the problem or how to check if my games use the intel graphics that would be great.thanks in advance! :)

Make sure you plugged your HDMI cable into the GPU not the MOBO. Go into the nvidia control panel and set the default choice too be the 970.

btw that is an awesome pc! when you get it working you will have an amazing time with it.

I plugged it into the GPU (didn't see it at first it's in a dark corner) and opened the control panel but where in the panel do I go to set that as the default?

If you had plugged it into the wrong one I would say that it will work now but if not open up the nvidia control panel and go to video settings I think and change the default option to the 970. I'm not on my desktop atm so i'll tell you in a little bit if I said anything wrong.
