This is my first time asking for help on this board, apologies if I've done it wrong.

I am looking to replace my current graphics card, an XFX HD 6850 with something equally, if not a little more powerful, but affordable. I don't want to replace any other parts if I can help it (don't want the new card to need a new power supply or fan, that kind of thing, don't want to wind up replacing the whole thing)

Any help, advice, or tips would be appreciated! Thank you! :)

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: As soon as possible

BUDGET RANGE: (CDN/USD $250ish) Before / After Rebates / free shipping if possible

USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Family computer. Lots of internet and streaming Netflix, etc. Some gaming, doesn't have to be bleeding edge / max specs. If it can be AS powerful as a current gen console, I'd be ok with that. Otherwise it's a family computer.

CURRENT SPECS:

  • Processor + Memory - Intel i5 2400 + PNY Optima 8GB (4x2)

    Motherboard - ASRock H61M-VS

Videocard - XFX HD 6850 (This is what I want to replace!)

Power Supply - Corsair Builder Series CX V2 430-Watt

    Case - Xigmatek ASGARD II

    HD - Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM

    Optical - LG CD/DVD Burner

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: Newegg or NCIX. The Canadian versions.

PARTS PREFERENCES: I was thinking of switching to nVidia cards, but I am happy for any advice.

OVERCLOCKING: No

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: No

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1680x1050

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Computer is connected to a Samsung TV via HDMI cable, we use it for Netflix, internet, some gaming.

The GTX 970 works fine with a 500 watt psu , so presumably the GTX 960 will work well with your power supply [ but I dont know yet , the card is not available] .
The 960 should be an excellent performer at the resolution you use

ASUS and Gigabyte are my preferred brands . If ASUS make a Strix version it should be silent with the fan off until it needs them . The gigabyte fans system is often the best available cooling solution

Is there a brand you'd recommend over another? I'm looking at the power needs for each card, is there one off the top of your head that will work with the supply I've listed? Thanks!
