Hello everybody. So, i'm getting Grand Theft Auto 5 for PC when it comes out. i used to record game play with my Elgato Game Capture HD card on my ps3. I want to also record my PC game footage when i play with my friends. I recently found out that i can use my elgato game capture on my PC. BTW, i have a 3 monitor set up. i have my game in the middle screen and the elgato program that records my game on one of the screens and then i run task manager in the other screen so i can see when my CPU goes to high. My GPU is a evga gtx 970. My CPU is an
Intel Core i5-4670K Processor
. So to try out my elgato on pc, i started playing Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). I usually get 200-270fps on CSGO. although when I run the game capture software that records the gameplay, my fps drops to 100-180 fps and the game play is extremely choppy. When i looked on my other monitor to see what my cpu was at, it read 85% (average). CS;GO was taking up 55-65% of my CPU and the game capture software was taking up 20-25% of my CPU.

So, my question is, if i were to overclock my CPU and buy a new CPU fan (over the stock one i am currently using), will my CPU usage be lower and will i be able to run my games more efficiently. Also, will I be able to record gta 5 on nice settings wile recording if I OC. Any suggestions as to how I can get a better recording experience. is my CPU not good enough?

Solution
Everything you are experiencing is totally normal and expected.

1. Switch from Elgato to Shadow Play. It's part of the nVidia package (GeForce Experience)
http://www.geforce.com/geforce-experience

2. Overclocking your CPU will show some benefits but nothing extraordinary. So will 16GB / fast RAM in a multitasking environment.

It should be fine how it is for 1080p, but at the same time, and overclock will always help. An overclocked i5 is the best thing for gaming you can have right now. Better processors do not improve performance. This is not entirely true when it comes to recording as well (but it does not make a huge difference)

If you are getting 100 fps and getting choppy gameplay something else is wrong. You should try other recording software as this one is buggy. As you said your cpu is not at full load so overclocking it will not help.
Either the software of the Elgato is not good or you might be running out of ram and it is trying to write to your harddrive constantly during gameplay. However this would affect fps. You could try fraps and see how it runs.

I would wish to clarify the above statement. The i5 when looked at by itself, is oft considered the "best buy" for gaming being about 70% of the i7's cost. But when looked at from a system's cost perspective, the 14% speed gain (@ stock settings) is much bigger than the $100 premium say on a $1200 system (8.5%). It's when the 4690k is overclocked, that it gets competitive with the 4790k.

The i5 is however by no means equal in performance to the 4790k. This mindset lingers from last generation CPus when the speed difference between the i5 and i7 was 100 Mhz..... now it's 500 Mhz.

1. At stock settings, the 4690k's speed is 3.5 Ghz / 3.9 Turbo .... the 4790k's stock speed is 4.0 Ghz, 4.4 Turbo. That makes the 4790k 14% faster which is measurable in gaming.

2. At overclocked settings, the 4690k's speed will get up very close to the 4790k's speed when overclocked eating much of that advantage..... but while a given 4690k may beat a given 4790k .... if ya take the average of 10 of each, the 4790k will OC better.

3. Hyperthreading also, while it doesn't have a great effect, will have some effect in certain games and when also recording / multitasking, this effect is increased.

$30 Hyper 212 shud get ya 4.5 Ghz, maybe 4.6 depending on what ya testing with
$60 Phanteks PH-TC14-PE shud get ya 4.6 Ghz, maybe 4.7 depending on what ya testing with
$100 Cryorig R1 shud get ya 4.7 Ghz, chip permitting
$140 Swiftech H220-X or H240-X can get ya 4.8 Ghz, chip permitting.

ok so i just used shadow play. it causes almost no fps drops and it is so nice to use. although i am having some problems recording my face and my audio with it. but i can do my audio in a separate program and recording my face is not necessary. I tried recording with shadow play in bf3 and csgo and its close to perfect. thx for the suggestion.

But is there anyway you may be able to fix the problem im having with the webcam not recording my face? i set it up and placed the camera option in the bottom left so when i view the recording i can see my face but when i go to see it it only rcords the game and the games sound but my face and my voice is not there.
