If I upgrade from Windows 7 32 bit to 64 bit can I save everything on my hard drive?

So my friend is planning to upgrade from Windows 7 32 bit to windows 7 64 bit. Is there an option to save all the data from his hard drive or does it just wipe the hard drive.

Solution
32-bit to 64-bit requires a clean installation (format the drive). However, by using Windows Easy Transfer your friend can back up the user profiles, which includes documents, music, videos, pictures, & program settings (settings only, not the programs themselves) to external media. After installing Windows, Easy Transfer can be run again to migrate the backed up profiles to the new system. Windows Easy Transfer can be found in (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools) Programs must be reinstalled.
