I was installing a cooler and I applied thermal paste when I decided to re adjust the cooler. The did I just break my cpu by taking off the cooler with thermal paste on it?

No :p that will not break a CPU. It is often recommended to reapply thermal paste after taking a cooler off however. The CPU should have thermal paste all on it when you take off the cooler.

you could just clean it off with alcohol and qtips and redo it if you want a perfect seal,or just make sure no bubbles/hair/dust is in the paste as u replace cpu cooler..,Less is more when applying thermal paste
