So I upgraded my PC with a MSI 970 Gaming mobo and a AMD FX cpu. The system is working ok for all but one new issue. My primary storage device for holding large amounts of data is my Samsung 1tb drive. I've had it since my first build 5 or so years ago and its been through more data than I can possibly imagine. (its literally the last part left over from my first rig that is still in use in my current rig)

Ever since the upgrade, the HDD has been making this loud clanking noise when I boot the computer. Fearing damage, I hard shutdown my PC before it even gets to the Windows logo. I pull off the side panel and check the drive to make sure its installed correctly and it is, but I still unplug and replug the sata cables. I then boot again and I hear no noise and the drive may or may not show up in windows. I've tested it several times now but the noise persists but every once in a while I can get it working normally and it works fine during that particular session and works flawlessly.

Any ideas whats up with it or is this old workhorse on its last legs and its time to backup and get a new drive?

Hey there, kl zealot!

Ndositwe is right. Unfortunately, the clicking noises are indicating that the drive is already failing and soon be dead.
The best thing to do now is backup the data from it ASAP & a new drive is probably a good idea.
Besides being a sign for failure, the clicking of the HDD means the damage is physical and you cannot DIY.

Good luck! Hope I was helpful! :)

SpinPoint F3 drives had detection issues with AMD's SB850 southbridge and possibly others. The problem was addressed in a firmware patch.

Firmware patch/update for certain Samsung F3 and F3EG drives:

https://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Known_issues#Samsung_Spinpoint_F3_and_Spinpoint_F3EG_are_not_detected_on_AMD_SB850:
"The drive will clunk every 2 seconds for 10 seconds and then power off itself when attached on the AMD SB850 southbridge."
