Currently my friend is using a Samsung Notebook NP300E5A
( http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/pcs/NP300E5A-A01UB-specs )

And he is in the market for buying a new laptop but this one he feels is currently slow and not to his liking anymore with the touch pad etc not working well and he wants a new one anyway. I sent him to a PC website where he can customize the laptop to his liking and price range which is 0 - 600 pounds. He then sent me the specs and I think they're okay? for the games he plays anyway.

Currently the games he plays are:

Garry's mod
L4D2
League of Legends
Don't Starve

But he also wants to play game a little bit more intensive but not by much, the new specs are;

Intel Core i3 Dual Core Mobile Processor i3-400M (2.40Ghz) 3MB
8 GB Kingston Sodimm DDR3 RAM
Nvidia GeForce GT 840M - 2.0GB DDR3 graphics card
500 GB hard drive
Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

Would you say that's worth the price of £585? would it be able to run the games he's hoping to play? Do you have anything you'd change to make it better or more cost effective? Do you know anything in the £600 price range with better / comparable specs?

Thank you!

If I may, the first question he should ask himself to begin with is "Do I really need a laptop?". Laptops are only really useful for work, when you really need to bring your files for conferences and stuff. Otherwise your end is dumbly throwing away is money. Laptops are slower, and way more expensive than PCs. In general, to achieve the same performance (if at all possible), you need to spend 4 times more on a laptop than on a pc.

Yeah laptops look cool and are fashion and all. Like everything else, they are designed for one thing; and it surely not gaming.

I agree with both previous answers. First ask yourself if you really want a laptop, because for the same price you can get a better desktop.
Secondly if you really need the laptop, try getting a more powerful GPU. The CPU you chose is fine for the games you've listed, but you definitely benefit from a better processor.
