As the title says, I'm a bit confused about making my SSD the boot drive for the OS while also using an HDD. I've been checking the forums and websites but still have questions and want to make sure I get everything right. These parts are all new so I do not need to migrate anything.

Here is what I think is right, please correct me if I'm wrong.
A) Unplug the HDD so only the SSD is connected then power on the PC.
B) Go into the BIOS and ensure AHCI is selected. Also check that all RAM is detected while there and set the optical drive to boot first.
C) Insert the Windows CD and install.
D) Get the wifi up and running.
E) Check for Windows updates. Go to the manufacturer site and update the motherboard drivers. Go to AMD site and update video card drivers.
F) Power down and plug in the HDD.
G) Power up and change boot order in the BIOS.

How am I doing? I'm trying to make this as simple as possible since this is my first time having to do this. Few more questions though...

1) Do I need the disk that came with the SSD at all?
2) What would be the proper boot order upon completion... SSD, then HDD, then optical drive?
3) Should I make a system restore point after finishing all this and how exactly do I do so?
4) Is the AMD catalyst worth downloading for game setting?
5) If my RAM speeds are shown to be slower then what it actually is capable of how do I change it and should I?
6) When I install a game or any other program will I always be asked which drive to put it on?
7) Did I miss anything else? Maybe something more needs updates?

1st build so I'm new and nervous. All help is appreciated.

Your installation procedure will work fine and will be simplest. +1

You shouldn't need any software that came with the SSD, windows can manage them fine unless there was something specific you wanted to do like encryption. I wouldn't bother with it personally.

I would personally set boot order to SSD > Optical as your not planning on installing another os on the HDD so it will never be bootable.

System restore points are created automatically I believe when you do major updates.

You need the AMD catlyst software imo- as it allows you to control many things with the GPU which aren't available without it. The AMD Raptr software is also good for getting the best settings for your games with minimal fuss.

Your ram should run at the rated speed, however sometimes it can show up slower (e.g. DDR3 1333), if that happens it isn't a terrible problem but you may as well tweak it. To do this you'll need to go into the BIOS on startup and in there you should be able to manually select the correct speed.

When installing software you usually get the choice where to install it, although many installers require you to choose the 'advanced' install option or it will just default to the SSD. I think with things like Steam you'll need to go into the options and tell Steam you want the install directory to be on the second drive.

I think that covers all the basics, and I'm sure you'll be fine :)

Thanks for the response.

So boot order will be SSD, then optical with nothing else? Did I understand correctly?
Yeah the example you gave with the RAM showing 1333 is what I came across in a few posts and exactly what I was wondering about.

As long as the SSD is first boot device it shouldn't matter really. I mean you can always go into the bios and change it again later if needed (e.g. if you wanted to install a new OS).
