I have an M3 portable 1TB Samsung model HX-M101TCB/G that recently kicked the bucket. It worked fine on my windows 7, but suddenly stopped altogether when I plugged it into my friend's computer with windows 8.1. Since then I've tried different computers and it's always the same, it doesn't show in 'Computer' and I can't excess any files, but it's there in 'Devices and Printers', I can safely eject it, the light on the drive turns on and I can hear it spin as I plug it. Also, under 'Computer Management' -> 'Disk Management' it's there under disk 1 and it's online, but it's 'unallocated' and it shows as if there is nothing on it.
I really don't want to try reformatting it since there's a bunch of files I need, but is there anything else I could do to make it work again? Or at least get those files?
