Long time lurker first time poster! I built a new PC a few months ago for gaming and to run a CCTV/file server and have had a lot of bother with it; hardware:
Motherboard: Sabertooth Mark 1 (Z97)
CPU: i7 4790k (not currently overclocked, NH-D15 cooler)
RAM: 4x4GB Corsair Dominator 1866mhz
GPU: XFX R9 280x
PSU: Corsair AX860
Not long after I got up and running the PC would shut off (hard - as if unplugging the PSU) after random intervals - gaming and resource intensive programs exacerbated the problem. When rebooting it would often fail again during boot (into Windows/Ubuntu) with the only solution being to disconnect the GPU and boot using integrated graphics, reconnecting the GPU after a clean shutdown.
While using the integrated graphics it has never once shutdown - I've even tried pushing it by gaming (Left 4 Dead 2 max settings). Temperatures are also fine, with CPU hitting ~65C while gaming and GPU about 75C. I tested the GPU in a friend's machine, and it worked for a week of moderate use without fault - so I'm ruling that out.
Being a server, I had 5x 3.5" drives connected - disconnecting these seems to slightly increase the time before shutdown. Interestingly while the GPU is connected, the shutdown sometimes occurs immediately when starting a game, but a few times it has lasted 5-6 hours before it dies.
Of course the first thing that came to mind was the PSU - but with the AX860 being among the best available I'm keen to look for any other problems (plus sending a PSU to corsair would cause a lot of server downtime - I have no spares).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - I'm pretty much out of ideas!
