Upgrading a computer need a new windows activation code?

So i am going to upgrade my friends computer and wipe his hard drive and i was wondering do i need to get another windows activation code?he is aiming for budget but whatever works he will take any comments will help. P.S. windows 8 or windows 7

As long as he is keeping the original MB that the OEM copy of Win7 was installed with, you can use the original product key. Win7 is tied to the MB on OEM machines and builders' machines. Win8 has its product key encoded in the MB BIOS but allows at least 3 re-installs on different boards.

So do i have to look in the bios for the product key or does windows8 automatically detect the product key?

I'm not a Win8 user*, so I don't have any practical experience on how it will behave when re-installed. But I wouldn't expect any issues. You're not violating any license contract by simply re-installing it on the same MB.

* All of the machines I have had Win8 on have been returned to Win7.
