Reduce gaming custom build noise

Hi Everyone,

I have a microATX gaming build and would like to reduce the level of noise I am getting. Changed the mobo and case 2 weeks ago.

The build is as follows:
cpu - Intel Core i5-3570K
cooler - SCYTHE SCSMZ-2100 Samurai ZZ CPU Cooler Rev.B
mobo - Asrock Fatal1ty Z77 professional-M
case - Aerocool DS Cube
GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 2GB 11199 00 20G
psu - Seasonic 620W S12II-620 80+ Bronze

My usual temperatures for CPU and GPU while playing Wasteland 2 on ultra are around 70-75 celsium. Using Afterburner to measure speeds now as SpeedFan didn't work properly for me. The fan speeds are set on default for GPU in Afterburner and target of 65 degrees for CPU in Bios (the highest possible there was).

Questions:
1. should I set custom fan speed for GPU to reduce the noise of GPU fan in Afterburner? What highest stable temperatures can I aim for the GPU?
2. and similarly for the CPU, what safe temperatures to aim for to reduce fan noise? And what program would you recommend? I don't see an option in Afterburner to control CPU fan
3. I plan on new GPU in next 3-4 months (most likely a GTX970 unless better card comes for same bucks), would that naturally lower the noise? Want to play Witcher 3, DA Inquisition, Shadow of Mordor all on ultra.
4. Any affordable change of hardware I should consider to get noise down?

Thanks for any advice

Solution
yeah its strange but i know some motherboard instead of giving the actual temps they calculate your cpu temps based on your cpu load so i might be it . Anyway the problem you have isn't really a problem . Your cpu is just getting hot and it forces your cpu cooler to run faster thus making more noise . If you really want quiet cooling you will need to invest in a good cpu cooler and good fans for it , even thinking on water cooling. The gtx 970 will also help with noise.

the case came with some stock fans, but they don't do much noise as far as I can tell. The noise only starts after I play for some time and the GPU/CPU start to heat

After a quick view of your sceps i will say that what is doing the most noise is the GPU and the case fans since your cooler is really quiet .
I would suggest replacing the case fans with quiet editions ones and after monitoring your GPU under load , if it dosen't gets near the brand advised max temp you could do a custom fan curve and lower the fan speed .

people on forums seem to suggest 80 degrees is the most I should consider fine longterm. Which I am fairly close now, sometimes I hit 76. So probably won't help to do custom fan curve.

Have asked local store if they have some custom fans for this case. There is an option to have fan on top, so I might add there one, maybe it helps.

Yeah , AMD cards usually are a lot noisy and hot so there isn't much to do with them. The only options for you are changing your case fans with quiet edition and trade the case itself for some silence series .

replacing case is not an option, bought it 3 weeks ago. Aerocool Dead Silence, so I expected it being silent.

I checked now and it seems it is the CPU fan making most of the noise. GPU fan gets up to 60% usage the most, but CPU is on 100% as the temps go above 65 degrees (as set in Bios). Tried SpeedFan and got Cores to 105 degrees by accident as Speedfan reported CPU temp at 45 degrees but Cores at 105.

Could have been I plugged the wires wrong to mobo or what could be the problem?

[EDIT] I managed to set advanced fan control in Speedfan based on Core temps now and noticed when I alt tab from the game to desktop, the Core temps get down by 40 degrees in a split of a second. Is that normal behaviour? I would expect it takes few second for temps to change that much.
Also, SpeedFan doesn't follow the custom curve I set for CPU fan, it goes from 40% to 100% and back straight away.

No , something is rong . try using a different temp monitor and report back.

How long do you have you cpu cooler mounted on your cpu ? could be the thermal paste or even the cooler not having a good contact with the cpu.

The 7870 is a lot like my 7850 I believe. Mine is an xfx ghost edition, single fan and it's usually pretty quiet until it goes under load. At full fan it whirs like the dickens. About the only thing you could do (may void the card warranty) is to removed the cooler on the graphics card and replace it with a better one. They have aftermarket coolers like cpu's do, with heat pipes, larger fans etc.

The cpu is in the mobo since 3 weeks back. I removed it from the old mobo, replaced thermal paste and mounted the cooler on top. It was a bit of a struggle to mount the fan as one of it's screws is placed so it's very difficult to get to.

I get the exact same temperatures behaviour in SpeedFan and Afterburner.

The CPU fan has a natural speed curve if I have it controlled from Bios (which I reverted to atm), but it gets to 100% at 65 degrees and I would like to move that to at least 85. That's where I tried SpeedFan and got the strange behaviour.

as for the GPU, I plan to sell it/buy new in 3-4 months and as I said it doesn't seem to be the cause for the noise. I will try to play without side and top panels tonight to see if the temps get lower.

difficult to say, it's definitely the newest. I am keeping other new rpgs (mordor, inquisition) for the next gpu.
I built this pc originally for witcher 2 ultra settings and I don't think I played anything as demanding since. I remember the fans running fast at that time as well. don't play shooters.

Anyways, I set the target FPS to 30 in WL2 options and got temps down on both cores and gpu by 10-15 degrees. no noise anymore.

Still doesn't explain why the cores temps change so fast by dozens of degrees though...

I agree. That's why I bought the current CPU cooler at the first place. I was reading a bit about water cooling and my understanding is it isn't really less noisy. I already found additional case fans I will buy, but it's always been the CPU cooler being most noisy. At the same time, I think my CPU is still fine for games so I want to get a better way to cool it rather than replace.

Any CPU cooler you can recommend? Something less noisy to what I have atm?

[EDIT] what about this particular one? SCYTHE SCMG-4000 Mugen 4 CPU Cooler. Local store suggested it as a quieter version of what I have.
