I noticed that i can get a ssd for this laptop but it would replace the dvd drive. i know as of right now i dont use the disc drive most things now are on flash drives or downloads. this laptop however i am surprised it can play alot of games havent tried late 2014 but im sure itll play at least at 720p which is good enough but if im going to be playing on it more i figure i might get the ssd but of course i believe i need the hdd caddy before i use it. so help me out here please

So wait i can get the ssd installed without the caddy and get one for the optical drive is what your saying? Also the laptop in question is the Q550LF Asus not as powerful as my desktop but its good enough for mobile gaming. was trying out BF4 and was taking forever to load lol

Because of the way the optical drive is fitted, you would need a caddy for the SSD, however, because the sata port for the DVD drive is normally slower, I would install the SSD where the hard drive is currently and move that hard drive to the DVD bay. A caddy for the optical drive will set you back about £10. I bought one about 3 months ago and it works extremely well for a 1tb hard drive I have for my laptop.

A ssd is the best laptop performance improver you can buy.
I suggest you simply replace your laptop hard drive with a ssd.
Intel and Samsung have free clone utilities that will do the job.
You may need to buy a $15 usb to sata adapter to do the job.

Thank you now i request links to the dvd drive caddy was going to get the hyperX 3k 120gb but what would you recommend? i already have the sata to usb im good on that thing is i dont know why but i set the forum to us not uk

For a caddy I bought this one and it works perfectly. For the SSD, do you have a budget and preferred capacity?

Basically the write speeds are faster. The price is also more, but if you want extremely fast write speeds go for the crucial (550MB/s from crucial vs 470MB/s from samsung). Crucial are cheaper too. :)

Because of Amazon I can get free 2 day shipping except for the caddy but I don't know where to find the caddy for the disc drive you were talking about

Sorry phone i typed disc spellchecked to discount without knowing

Just search for "dvd external caddy" in amazon, all of them will do the job, it's just your personal preference as to which one you buy :)

What do you mean? Did you pull off the plastic cover from the DVD drive and you are having trouble fitting it to the caddy?

couldnt get the bracket over the caddy but was able to get the panel back on. i know i forgot to put the dvd cover on before the panel but it just seems like the caddy just bigger than it should be. plus the dvd cover does get on there but somethings not right. the one you recommended is just bigger that it fits but doesnt look right. the 12.7mm is bigger than the disc drive. not worth sending it back ill have to get the 9.5mm one even a different one going through q550lf hddcaddy has a 9.5 mm
