Firstly, I am sorry if this is in the wrong section please move to right one if you feel you should.

So I can't decide. I just got a shiny new gaming PC for Christmas and have lots of games (mostly FPS) and I can't decide if I should but a mechanical keyboard or more games. Right now I use this, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823207003 if I bought a mechanical it would be this, http://www.amazon.com/Razer-BlackWidow-Tournament-Essential-Mechanical/dp/B00IG3GPC0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420851913&sr=8-1&keywords=Razer+blackwidow+tournament So should I get games or a mechanical keyboard? By the way I LOVE the sound of a mechanical.

God bless, yourender2.

If you care more about looks and lights and wants an easy to use keyboard, buy Razer, if you want some advanced/complex software, get Corsair but they don't have lighting and looks as good as Razer. But to answer your main question, I think it's worth it if you want a long lasting keyboard with better built quality.

That's a personal decision. For the prices they charge, it would have to be a really good keyboard. I tend to use microsoft or logitech basic membrane keyboards for a couple years and just replace them for $20. I don't play any games like wow that might benefit from a whole bunch of specialized buttons or anything (not even sure those come available on mechanical keyboards). Kind of funny since mechanical keyboards are the old fashioned style and now that they're reverting to them (because they were built better than the newer 'improved' membrane keyboards) they make it sound like they're something new and charging a premium for something we already had to begin with (the old ibm standard keyboards). Just like they make a big deal about new enhancements to allow x amount of key rollover using the new and improved usb port. The ps/2 ancient as it was never had that issue and was natively n-key rollover. They're creating more issues than they're fixing.

No doubt they're likely built a little better (if it's a reputable brand like das keyboard or topre, logitech or even ibm). Like most things now days 'gaming' or 'performance' is a bit gimmicky and I've seen just as many issues with 'leet gaming' stuff from brands like razer as I have with cheapy no name things costing much much less. It's really difficult to make purchases without having tried them when it comes to peripherals. How does that monitor really look to you or how does that keyboard or mouse feel to you. That's what's most important.

It's a day and night difference b/t a mechanical keyboard and membrane. Whether or not you want to pay the premium for a keyboard that will be easier to type on and more durable is up to you. It's not just the sound that's different but mechanical keyboards also have a lower actuation force (with a few exceptions like MX green, white and black) and some have a tactile bump which you can feel while typing.

Also Razer keyboards don't use real Cherry MX switches (the good stuff) they use cheap Chinese Kailh switches re branded as Razer Green, Orange, etc.

Here's a good guide to help you pick which switch best suites you if you can't try them out yourself if you decide to go with a mechanical keyboard.

Well, these are all very helpful. I have tried out the switched (kinda) and they feel sooo tacticle comapred to my membrane. My limit is about $80 what keyboard would you recommend if not Razer?

I've only bought Razer because of the colors, ripple effect is awesome, starting from the key you press, it ripples like water across the rest of the keyboard. I like having both looks and quality at the same time rather than just pure performance/quality, but that's just me :)

You can still find decent keyboards for ~$80. My friend has a CM Storm Quickfire which went for around $90 when he bought it. It's well built no doubt. Maybe not as feature rich as more expensive models but it's still a good keyboard.

Huh good point RCFProd, also the switch type is very similar to MX Blue, it's a Razer brand Green switch. I won't be buying until Feburary starts but if I wait until the end of Feb. I could spend $140 but a keyboard just isn't worth that much IMO. I almost do like a slim keyboard because mine is really high up now and it is throwing me for a loop because I'm used to a laptop so I might try the Deathstalker. I don't mind not having features like macros or num pad
