Can someone tell me what carrier sim will work in my US Cellular Galaxy S5. It is supposed to be unlocked but will not take my T-mobile sim card. And where I live US CELLULAR provides nothing but 3G service. And I would like 4G. Thank you
Most large carriers in North america operate the following
GSM on 850 Mhz, and 1,900 Mhz (2G)
UMTS on 850 Mhz, and 1,900 Mhz (3G, some 4G)
LTE on 1,700 Mhz, 2,100, and 2,600 Mhz (4G)
Your Galaxy S5 supports the following:
GSM on 850, 900, 1,800 and 1,900 MHz
UMTS on 850, 900, 1,900 and 2,100 MHz
LTE on 800, 850, 900, 1,800, 2,100 and 2,600 MHz
T-Mobile operates GSM on 1900 Mhz, and UMTS on 1700 Mhz in the continental USA and American territories. Since T-Mobile has less licenced spectrum than its major competitors, it has to use that same spectrum more conservatively. Similarly, they are less financed and are slower to build out than other carriers.
As a result, your Galaxy S5 can only connect to the T-Mobile carrier on their 1900Mhz GSM network. Your phone cannot connect to the 1700Mhz UMTS network because 1700 Mhz is not supported by the Galaxy S5. In the future, T-Mobile will have an LTE network on 2,100 Mhz that your phone should be able to connect to; this network is accessible in some areas but is not yet complete.
Wireless support is very regional, but you may have some luck with AT&T or Verizon.
