Hi,

I recently installed new ram, and can't get the usable amount past 4gb. I am 100% certain my Windows is 64bit. Task manager shows a total of 4094mb. CPU-Z shows 8gb. My BIOS shows 4gb and change. I did check and make sure the memory mapping was enabled. I tried going into msconfig and already had the "maximum memory" unchecked. I did try checking that and "8192" came up, rebooted, but that didn't work either.

Regarding the ram, I had 2x2GB that I purchased about 2 years ago, I pulled a stick out to get the info off of it, and with the model ID located the exact same RAM and purchased it. I double checked the timing, cas latency, and voltage, all match. The RAM is Corsaid XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) 240 Pin DDR3 1600.

I've searched the web including this forum, and the only thing I can find to try that I have yet to do is reseat the CPU. I don't understand how that would help, and would like to try and avoid that. If anyone has any other ideas, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Charlie

Doesn't sound like a windows problem. To me if it doesnt show me 8gig ram in bios you'll never see 8 in windows. Check your motherboard even supports 8 gig. If it does make sure all the memory will work with each other. Also changing ram around in ram slots have worked for me in the past even if they are the same or mismatched.

Have you tried resetting your bios either by jumper or removing battery. Shouldnt have to but worth a try. Other wise update your bios and try that.

I recently got a new solid state and made that my main drive. I installed a fresh version of Windows 7 64bit. I have the latest BIOS. I checked my mother board and it does support 8GB.

I reseated and swapped my ram around, going 1 stick at a time. This solved the issue! Thank you all so much, I really appreciate all the help. This is the best forum, so many great, and quick responses. While this RAM was identical, I believe by swapping the pairs to the other slots resolved the issue. I could tell which 2 were old, and which 2 were new. I swapped their positions while keeping them paired, and I think that's what did it. Otherwise, just reseating did it.
