I've been helping my buddy taking apart his PC to clean it after a CPU overheat (i think) caused his pc to shut down while gaming sniper elite 3. The components were very dirty even though being in a dust filtered case, so i thought it would be best to take it apart, clean it and put it back together. After reassembly i booted up, chose boot drive, then windows updates and restarts. Finally I can log in to windows, but then after a short while the screen goes black.

When his pc shut down the first time after gaming, he tried rebooting shortly after and he mentioned a spark on the motherboard, which of course indicated a short out.
But im still baffled by this, to me it makes no sense that the pc powers on, loads hdd, starts windows and then goes black after. I don't know if this is motherboard, CPU, GPU or software related. Also the screen doesn't go black when in safe mode.

Im really hoping some of you can help me get this fixed, please come with suggestions and ask all you can to get more relevant information out of me.

Thanks :)

If Safe Mode isn't exhibiting the same black screen symptoms as Normal Mode, it's likely your graphics card. If you have another slot you can try the card in, I would do that first, without uninstalling drivers.

If that doesn't work, try either on-board graphics if available, or another graphics card altogether.

You said the motherboard sparked. If you've got damage to the power circuitry supplying the PCIe x16 slot, the board may be shot in that regard. Once you get to Windows and crank up the memory and core clocks on the GPU, power needs go up. Did you remember to plug the PCIe power connection(s) back into the graphics card? It needs all of the plugs available on the card connected.

If other graphics devices have the same black...
if the gpu has an issue or the mb the mb in windows may be falling over to the onboard video port. if the port is on in reg windows mode try this. go into safe mode and use a ati or nvidia drive cleaner and uninstall and clean the drivers up in windows. then reboot and install the newest drivers. if the gpu shuts down again in windows pull it see if the onboard video stays on fine. try a test gpu see if it the mb slot or the card. look on the card and or mb for any burnt spots. most time you can smell a bad part before you find it with your eyes.

Yeah actually that was my next step, trying to reinstall GPU and MB driver alwell as trying a recovery to before the latest windows update. Would there be any point in trying to install latast BIOS drivers?

If other graphics devices have the same black screen effect, I would consider heading into BIOS and sitting on the page that shows fan speeds, temperatures, and voltages for 15 - 20 minutes. Watch the temps and voltages to see if they're in range, and whether or not the computer can even do this successfully. If the system is so unstable it blacks out at this point, you know you have a low level hardware problem and anything you do with Windows is going to be a waste of time.

Next, proceed to test the memory modules.
