Help me build a 550$ steam machine

Solution
Yes, the Corsair 250D will work fine (it is just more expensive). Actually the system is not that hard to assemble, it is just time consuming :)

An updated part list (with today's prices in the US) is:

I agree about $550 being the biggest problem. You can make an excellent Steam box for $660 (before $40 rebates) that is very quiet (the PSU is fanless) and has wifi:

True. I do like the Corsair Carbide series, but the Steam boxes are normally supposed to blend in and not really be a full PC when they are sitting by the TV (at least from my perspective).

Thank you for the quick answer :)
#But the case and RAM is unavailable currently on newegg (P.S. i live in India and only newegg ships to my country) can you suggest another case and RAM similar to these ones?
# the SSD is too expensive. Can you suggest a hard drive instead
#Please correct me in this, but isn't the factory cooler enough?
#And would the PSU suggested by i7Baby be enough?

Ah, I didn't realize that you were outside the US. The cooling fan is because the case is so small that the standard fan won't fit. Changing it so that everything is from NewEgg and using a 500GB hard drive (laptop drive, to fit better in the small case) gives this set up:

CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor ($69.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i 57.5 CFM CPU Cooler ($44.99 @ Newegg)

I changed the RAM, but the case is showing as available right now (they don't have many, so they go in and out of stock frequently).

The PSU that I listed is fanless, so it makes no noise at all. You do pay a bit more for that, but it means that the system makes only a little more noise than an XBox One.

Also, please note that I have not tried out that wifi adapter on the Steam OS - you may have to use command line Linux (Steam OS) to load its drivers - the one that I originally posted has built in support on Linux and Steam OS.

If cost is your biggest concern, the lowest priced power supply from NewEgg that I would use on that system is the Rosewill ARC M450 for $40 with the current promotion code. It is partially modular, so fitting everything in the small case is still possible - but it does have a fan and is not as efficient, so it will be noticeably loud in a living room.

Thanks dude,
but the case is not available in Newegg India.(I don't know about USA)
I found a similar case (corsair obsidian 250D)
should I buy that instead? or please suggest something else. P.S. easy buildables would be better because I'm kind of a noob. And the corsair carbide 200r looks easy to build, but huge and space consuming on the living room.

Thanks again!
I'll go for your build. If I'm a little short I'll buy the Rosewill ARC M450 PSU instead.

In all honesty, you don't need a CPU cooler on a pentium dual-core processor.

This is a decent build, and is more closely to what you want case wise. This case is console size and very attractive; sits horizontal and vertical. Amazon shipping is free for these items so the total cost you would pay to Amazon is $639.57. Try to mix between what we have suggested to build your own custom cheap Steam Machine. Mine is cheap and with good components. :) There are rebate forms for this motherboard on Amazon's page worth $20 dropping the total price down to $619.57. Beat that SUKAS!

All these items are on newegg.com as well. You should consider the "Case" at the least. I think you well like it. Also amazon ships everywhere. Maybe not free though. If you like that case make sure you get that Power Supply, "SFX" form factor as well.
