Hi Members,

I'm intending to make a 50ft ethernet cable connection between an "ASUS RT-AC87U Wireless AC2400 Dual-band Gigabit Router" and a "D-Link 16-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch DGS-1016A".

Would I need a Power Over Ethernet connection for this or will a regular Ethernet connection be fine?

What I want to do is connect my ASUS router in my study to the D-Link switch in my living room.

This is a 50ft run. When do people generally start requiring a Power Over Ethernet connection?

Thanks very much for any feedback fellow members.

Thank you to my fellow members above for your answers. It's quite a good cable I bought similar to ToughCable brand. Cat 6 shielded. I'm running the cable under my floor. My house has floor boards and is elevated about 350mm off the ground. So I'm going to string the ethernet cable through the rafters. It's not exposed to any UV or water whatsoever. So it's outdoors but it's pretty well protected. No Dog to chew through the cable etc.

Do you think I should run it in conduit? Or just neatly thread it over the beams?

Just to clarify:

Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) is not used to extend the distance of Ethernet signaling over cables. It is used to power devices that can't be powered using an AC adapter.

A couple of examples are power for an outdoor wifi security cam or outdoor wifi access point.

Neither your Asus nor D-Link are PoE enabled.
