New overclocker, need help Z97-A

I just built a new PC with Z97-A and 4690k, and I am stuck trying to overclock my processor. From default settings on the Z97-A I changed CPU ratio to 44 and core voltage to 1.25, but when I boot up, I checked CPU-Z and it says my speed is 8-44x. It stays at 800 mhz till I run something. How do I set to run at the speed I want all the time? What is the setting?

Im not too professional with what model you have but is it AMD, Nvidia or Intel?

Did you disable Intel Speedstep? Did you read some of the OC guides? There's a lot of them out there that use the Z97-A.

Don't disable speedstep - there is no point. The multiplier will spin up appropriately under load and save power and cycles when sitting on the desktop or surfing.

I know there's a turbo button on AMD's that pushes it to the limit all the time and if i'm not wrong that option is also available for Intel cards.

Well, it won't down clock the CPU as much, which is what the OP was really after. Does it change overclocking performance?Like you said no.

You're welcome. The key thing you need to take away from a guide is the process. You won't have that motherboard forever and for the foreseeable future, the process appears to be going to stay the same.
