I have a 500 watt power supply, but my PC shuts off during GPU intense games.

I bought a cheap PC on newegg from Cyber Power. I got it because it is a secondary PC and I knew that 500 watts should be enough to expand to a gtx 750ti some day. My PSU is 500 watt non modular power supply. I have an old 550 I put in while I get enough money to upgrade. Unfortunately during this process I realized that my PSU had no 6 pin cable for my GPU. I used what I believed is called a molex adapter, a 3 pin male that insets into a 4 pin female that has a 6 pin adaption. This worked fine until I tried playing planet side 2, after a while my PC would just go black screen, but with all the lights in. I have checked my temperatures but everything was below 50. I am assuming this is just my GPU shutting down because everything else is still lit up. My major question is, should I buy a new power supply, or is thisw just a problem with my GPU hardware or my adapter?
