OK so I am running cat ethernet through my house. My modem and router are in my parents bedroom on the first floor at one end of the house. I want to put a switch in the basement and have several rooms connected to the switch. I plan on having the modem connected to the router then plugged inot the switch.

My goal is to have this setup allow me to play games with my friends whether we are wired or wireless. As long as the router is before the switch this should be possible right? This is my biggest concern.

I also have a extra router I would like to have made into a wireless access point. This would be placed in my room on the second floor on the very opposite side of my house. My 2.4 gets a bit slow and don't get me started on the 5ghz.

The modem can not be move to another location and the router may need to be connected between the modem and switch.

What I need to known is if I can have the device sequence in this order modem>router+wireless devices>switch+wired devices >wireless access point (repurposed router) + wired and wireless devices.

I need to have every computer to be able to play Lan games with each other no matter how they are connected. My friends prefer wired connection to eliminate lag and we are tired of running cables aroused the floor and to other rooms.

I also plan to have a Nas to store all of my videos, games, and files. So does any one know I'd a smart TV can detect a Nas and read video files off of it?

Yes, connected Modem > Router > Switch > AP (router must be connected to modem), with devices being able to connect to any of the last 3 items. This will keep all devices on the same subnet to allow sharing/gaming. Just remember to follow the method in the wireless forum sticky to configure the repurposed router.

Just about every NAS has a DLNA enabled media...

Just about every NAS has a DLNA enabled media server built in. Current generation smart TVs for the most part do a poor job of handling media sharing, but if the TV has a DLNA enabled app, you may have luck with it.

Arguably better methods for streaming are available. The XBox 360, XBox One and PS3 can stream via DLNA, with PS4 reportedly supporting it in the near future. Most of the other media streaming devices (Roku, Chromecast, etc) have DLNA apps available.

Thank you for the clean clear-cut answer to my poorly written and mess question. My cables are almost done being ran, I just got some free 10 year old computers to re-purpose into a nas, and I am ready.

I plan on making the streaming easy for my parents who have a smart tv in their room and Im sure soon enough will replace the main one with a smart tv. Right now they dont even use the smart fuctions as it is, so using a game system is outa the question.

I do like the thought of using the chromecast or something like it. Too bad the chrome cast is dependent on another device.
