So a friend just upgraded his gpu and I would be able to get his old radeon hd7870 for very cheap. I was wondering if it is still good enough to run games at pretty high settings, and what the rest of the parts I should buy to make a gaming PC. I don't really have a budget for the rest of the parts per se, but I'd prefer not to spend more than $800 aud unless it made a big difference to performance or future proofing. I don't plan on overclocking, and I already have windows, so no need for that either.

If it is worth buying a new gpu I would be able to go up to $1200-1300 aud or so. Cheers

This should work. But you could go with your friend's 7870. If he sells it to you for less than 180 dollars you could go with it too. But the r9 290 is like 50% better. With this you should be able to run any actual game on ultra (except for ACU on high, bad optimitzation)
