Does R9 290X really outperform GTX 970 at 1440p?

I can't understand how R9 290X outperforms GTX 970 at 1440p.

I mean GTX 970 is newer GPU, it has better microarchitecture, it has significantly more memory speed and higher core clock... how R9 290X beats GTX 970 at 1440p... is it only thanks to higher bandwith?
In my country both are at same price... so i have to choose between R9 290X and GTX 970 for 1440p. Also what are the overclock limits of each card?

The 290x is basically a over clocked 290. It's just guarenteed to run at higher clock speeds. Just save some money on the 290. It really doesn't matter if you go Nvidia vs AMD. They both run games well, and they have to compete so the prices are almost matched.

My mate has the GTX 980, I have the 290 (not the 290x) and I can say that the GTX 980 > my one --> but only just!
We basically have the same system, except his CPU is the i5 4790k, mine is 4750, however in all the games we play (WoW, Swtor, far cry 3, pay load, landmark etc) his gets about 1-2 fps better on the same setting hahaha.

I tell a lie, in Landmark he gets about 5-6 better - and that's with the 290, not 290x.

So honestly, go with what you want, they are so close I don't think you'll really notice the difference.

EDIT - Oops, forgot the OC limit. My 290 can go to 1.2ghz without crashing - but I got 1 maybe 2 fps better in landmark with that OC - it just doesn't make that big of a difference.

Some more real-world benches prove these cards to be fairly equal in 1440p performance. Ref: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuDneh8Q3U4.

I'd personally go for the GTX 970, because ATI's overly elaborate and sometimes, clumsy catalyst center makes me sad :(
(ATI made some changes in 2004, that are still ruining it for me today).
There is also the power consumption and heat issues to contend with when taking the 290X into account.

Why higher resolutions are bandwith dependent? In this case will i see big difference between R9 290 and R9 290X?
