New Build:

  • GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-UD5H
    Intel Core i7-4790K
    CORSAIR RM Series RM1000 1000W
    Mushkin Enhanced Reactor 1TB
    MSI GTX 970
    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 (from previous build)
I installed Windows 8.1 Pro x64 yesterday and it has been very unstable. Sometimes it will get 1/3 of the way through a boot and restarts, sometimes 2/3 through a boot and restarts, sometimes it boots up fully only to restart 5 seconds later, sometimes it works fine for a while but will restart when I open chrome. I reinstalled Windows 8.1 after formatting the hard drive and it stayed on long enough to download and install the most recent drivers. The longest it was on for was a couple of hours while I was downloading Far Cry 4 and I opened up a YouTube video and it restarted after a few seconds. Since then it hasn't been able to stay on for more than 5 seconds. I had created a restore point after I had updated to the newest drivers so I restored to that point and still the longest it will stay on for is about 5 seconds.

I have unplugged everything but the essentials (CPU, heatsink, hard drive, optical drive, 1 stick of RAM) and I am having the same problem so my assumption is that it is the motherboard. However the BIOS works just fine. It has been sitting in the BIOS screen for about an hour now. All of the temps are fine. CPU has never gotten above 55°C.

BIOS version: F5 (I have not updated the BIOS)

I have tried removing the battery (with AC disconnected) then loaded optimized settings, as suggested in another thread, and I am having the same problem.

I am at a loss of where to go from here. Does anyone have any ideas?

Wouldn't hurt to check all of your connections as well. Do you have another PSU to test with? It may also be worth re-installing Windows to see if that was the issue, however it seems more like a hardware issue.

I have tested with a single RAM module. I don't have another hard drive to test with.

I have checked all of my connections and I have re-installed windows once already. I may be able to test on another PSU when my roommate gets back from work.

Sounds good. If its not the PSU, post back and we'll think of something else.

I have tested it without the GPU and I don't have another hard drive to test on.

Its either the hard drive or memory. Do you have a extra hard drive or computer you could use? Maybe a friend or computer shop near you?

Its probably not the motherboard. The drivers the board comes with should work fine.

I tested the hard drive in another computer and it works fine. The memory works fine as well.
