Hi,

My question is can you suggest any reliable Windows-based alternatives to an Asus K750JN in the US$1000 range with a I7-4700 four-core or faster CPU that I can readily add an SSD and additional RAM in the future? I use it for research/academic work with my typical configuration being MS-Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, Naturallyspeaking v12 voice recognition, Firefox browser with 100 to 200 tabs open at a time, Adobe reader with 40 to 50 files open and Foobar music player and Bitdefender firewall.
I purchased an Asus K750JN computer based on the idea that with its powerful I7-4700 Intel four-core processor, I would be able to upgrade it in the future with more RAM and an SSD drive and have it for a few years. However, I realize now I made an error since Asus has made it next to impossible for an owner to upgrade or do routine maintenance. In order to gain access to the additional RAM slots and extra drive bay, an owner must go through a complex process of removing all the screws from the back which then allows the owner to remove the keyboard which is kept in place by many clips and connected by a series of short wires which apparently are easily broken according to the various webpages I have read. Reassembling it is then something of a nightmare. Asus seems to have taken a page from the Apple control freak playbook and made it next to impossible for owners of this unit to do any RAM or SSD upgrades or even routine maintenance like clean out fans. So it is very ironic that the laptop’s box proudly states it is printed with environmentally friendly soya-based ink when the box contains a computer that is designed intentionally to be obsolete as soon as possible. I’m seriously considering returning this unit because I do not have any sort of an upgrade potential which to me is a very serious cost to owning this unit.
