So my PC, which I built myself in the summer of 2014 randomly plays the USB device connected/disconnected sound. For reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9oNybVjeuU

Sometimes it is a few times a minute, sometimes it's only once in an hour. But lately, I have noticed it more often. I have a wired keyboard, mouse, usb network adapter, and Xbox controller for steam plugged in. I have tested each device in each usb slot on both the front panel and back, but have noticed no pattern. The sound does play when I connect or disconnect devices as it should.

The sound plays with no pattern. Sometimes the connected sound plays multiple times in a row, sometimes it plays connect, disconnect, connect, disconnect very rapidly.

I do not believe it is the USB peripherals causing the problem. Any ideas what else it might be?

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried reinstalling drivers for said devices? Have you had any OS or other system updates that may have effected the use of the devices? Have you tried using the devices with a different PC, and using different devices with your PC? Looking at these points should quickly narrow down where the issue is, as from your post it just looks like you have been swapping USB slots on the same PC with the same devices, which would only rule out a connectivity issue with a specific USB port.

I believe the problem only occurs when I have a steam controller (xbox 360) attached. I also have a wired mouse. Could the two devices be conflicting? I never had to instal any controller drivers from what I can remember, it was just plug in and play.

Hi
The classic reason for this is an internal fault in the mouse or controller cable which goes open circuit for an instant when you move the mouse or controller.
So the question is,does it only happen when you move the mouse or the controller.

It does not. I unplugged all peripherals (except for usb network adapter) and was still getting the sound. Although I believe it was occuring less frequently. It is not the network adapter, as the sound still plays even when using an ethernet cable.

I have since turned off the alert sound from the control panel, which is a pretty good fix as the peripherals all seem to work fine.

I have the same problem... but know what's causing it. I have an nMediaPC LCD display installed into one of my spare 5.25" slots in my case... it's old and the driver is outdated... and when I boot up my computer... it sometimes takes a while for it to finally connect.. but the beep can be irritating at times. What I did was just go to Sound Schemes on my computer and turned off that particular device action sound... problem solved...

If you don't know or are worried about which device is having problems... try to quickly go to Device Manager and seeing which driver isn't installed... then you can just try to uninstall it.. restart.. and install it again..

Thanks, good to know for future reference. However, my solution was to disable the sound via control panel. This has worked great and I no longer am annoyed. Completely forgot I had this issue, actually.

I experienced the same problem. I did not make any hardware change before the the USB disconnect tone (and only the disconnect sound rather than cycles of connect/disconnect tones) started to occur. I checked the Windows event viewer. There was no event in any of the logs that could be related to the sound. The USB Viewer application in one of the previous posts helped because every time there was a sound, the USB Viewer screen refreshed although still unable to pinpoint the specific device.

In my case, the problem went away after I physically removed the Transcend memory card reader. So in your case, it had to be caused by one of the USB devices.
