About a week or so ago we switched our internet from Verizon DSL to Time Warner Cable's cable internet. It was working great until this weekend, when my brother and I started experiencing regular ping spikes while online gaming. At first we though someone might be using the internet/downloading something, however we came to realize we were spiking ever ~15 seconds to about 250-750ms regardless of other internet connections. This has persisted the last 2-3 days, so I began to troubleshoot on my end before calling TWC (cause let's be honest, it's no fun calling your ISP).
I believe I narrowed down the problem to be the connection with our modem/router. It's a combination unit (NETGEAR CG3000DV2F8) that was bought brand new when we got our internet a few weeks ago. When I ping 192.168.0.1 (the address of the modem/router) I get <1ms most of the time, but about every 10-20 sec it will jump to 250-750ms. I tried this on both of our desktop computers (both running win7, both hardwired to the router) and got similar results.
I'm not really sure how to resolve this issue, or even diagnose it further. I know it is not our online game's fault (tested on League of Legends and Guild Wars 2), and it isn't a wireless issue. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.
