Hello everyone, this is my first post here so sorry in advance if I don't give all the required info from the start. So, my problem is as described in the title - I've been playing Starcraft 2 when all of a sudden some gray squares filled the screen and the pc froze. My PC is two years old, and my specs are as follows:

  • ■ Asus Radeon HD 7870 (HD7870-DC2-2GD5-V2)
    ■ AMD FX 8100 CPU
    ■ Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 (rev 3.0)
    ■ OCZ ZS Series 750W (OCZ-ZS750W-EU) power supply
    ■ I guess other parts don't matter much, and I can't remember them off the top of my head, but if you need I'll look into the case itself.
I rebooted with the reset button and it didn't boot, and then on the screen a message 'input not support (sic)' appeared. I've tried to let it cool down a bit, although overheating has never been a problem for me before, still didn't work. Then I decided to try another PCIe port, and still no luck. Only then when I've found my old VGA cable the PC booted and I saw the BIOS messages. POST goes okay, then I see the Windows 8 logo, then the screen goes blank. When I tried to enter the BIOS settings, it worked, but in some places on the screen there were purple rectangles. I guess it happened because of old age or something, but still I wonder if anything can be done because 2 years doesn't seem like much to me, or I should just fork over some cash for a new card. Thanks in advance for your replies.

BTW: are new Radeons any good? And if I buy one, can I hope it won't let me down in just 2 years?

Tried a tested and working VGA cable
The monitor and the HDMI cable work perfectly, tested on my notebook.
I have no other graphics cards to test with, or I would've already done that.

The power supply was bought in November 2013. The graphics card was bought in November 2012. I'm sure.

The PSU is hopefully good then, but we need to check it just to verify. Can you borrow another PSU or test the card in another rig?

I'll try the PSU in another PC tomorrow at work, but there aren't any high-spec PCs there, so it won't put the PSU under much stress and the card won't fit anywhere.

Well that won't work then. Is there a computer shop nearby? Usually they will charge $75 for walking in the door, but maybe they will waive the cost if you cry a bit :p

I can just as well try and bring my card in for repair somewhere then, or buy a new one (I was going to anyway, though not so soon). I don't think it's a problem with the PSU though, because when I enter the BIOS settings it works, albeit with purple squares, and the PSU shouldn't be under much stress during that, should it?

The PSU might not be filtering properly, which can cause problems even if under very light loads.

Oh. Well, I'll try to find somewhere where I can test my card, though I doubt I'll be able to do that any time soon. Thanks for all the answers.
