I am considering in upgrading my cpu from an i5 2500 non k model to an i5 4690K or even to the i7 4790K. i know the 2500 still has power when it comes to gaming and other things such as mild 3d modelling, rendering and programming but it starts to show a bit in a game for example bf4 were overclocking the 2500K yields a higher average framerate due to it having the ability to oc but the average i get on my standard 2500 is 80 which isnt to bad.

first built mid 2012 and the only component i have upgraded since then was the gpu which i upgraded from a 550ti to the gtx 760.

My current build.
CPU: i5 2500
CPU cooler: intel stock cpu cooler
Motherboard: evga z68 sli micro
GPU: gtx760 gigabyte windforce 2gb
PSU: thermaltake 600 watt
RAM: 3 DDR3 4gb sticks (no idea what brand)
Hard Drive: 500gb WD
Case: Aopen nagas g5

the current price for the i5 4690K is $309 Australian and the i7 4790K is $439 Australian

Would it be worth while at this point in time to upgrade my cpu or wait possibly 2 years and upgrade the cpu which in that time ill be using my computer more for 3d modelling, rendering and and less for gaming.

You know you can oc the non k 2500 400mhz using the turbo multiplyer on a z68 board. I would just get a cheap cpu cooler and do that. a 4ghz 2500 will still be fine, especially with only a gtx 760.

+4 to each turbo multiplier in the bios.

I think you should wait for intel's 5th gen CPUs. i7 dual cores are said to be out this month and i7 quad cores mid year. Info on Intel's website shows that most dual core 5th gen i7s use a max TDP of only 15W. With Intel Iris graphics, it uses a max TDP of 28W which are both significant improvements over even 4th gen CPUs which use around 84W.
Might take longer for them to be available here in Australia though.

Prices might go up very soon, but it all depends on if you need the performance or not.

I'm running a completely stock i7 870 (since early 2010) and I'm gonna wait for 5th gen CPUs and maybe get a 2nd graphics card at the same time (since my motherboard doesn't support crossfire).

Dont think there will be any 5th Gen Desktop LGA chips, low power chips only.

i did discover that in a game such as bf4 when the cpu hits about 90% to 96% load i do get an average framerate of 80 but when the cpu stays at about 70% to 80% load i get an average of 100 fps.

in regard to rob if i were to overclock the cpu what cpu cooler would you recommend for the task.

thanks for the help I'll do what rob suggested and oc the cpu a tiny bit and since ill be buying a cpu cooler i may aswell buy the corsair h100i due to the fact that if i buy any future cpu down the line i can overclock it significantly as well as buying a cpu cooler I'll also purchase a new case which will be a corsair 350D and a good reliable ssd like an intel one.

im guessing what rob is suggesting is oc the base clock so it matches the turbo clock to give a consistent speed.
