I just bought a Seagate tb expansion hard drive, but when I put a movie on it I couldn't play it on my western digital WDTV Live. Not sure if I need to format it first. I do own the exact same Seagate 2 tig hard drive and that one gets recognized. So I don't know what to do

That media player seems to support most all common file systems, so I doubt formatting is the issue. Have you tried putting other video files on there that you know work? Perhaps it's just the video file that it's not recognizing the file type or codec.
