Upgrade from FX-8120 to FX-6300, or wait for Intel rig?

Hello, currently I run on an Amd FX 8120 @3.5ghz and a GTX 770 SC. As of right now, on BF4 64player I avg about 70-90fps on Low settings. If I upgraded to the FX-6300, how much would that Avg fps increase? Good idea for the meantime, or should I just wait till I can build an Intel system? Thank you in advance to anyone that answers.

There's no point in going for a heavily overclocked FX-8350 when you have to buy a new motherboard, cpu...

Personally, i would change the gpu first, the 770 is not very good for today standards, try selling it and get the r9 290. Thats what will give you a big jump on performance. And then change to an intel i5, you will not see any benefit increase from the 6300 while playing games.

There's nothing wrong with the 770, and changing it will not affect performance at all. It will affect what graphical settings you can run games at, but performance will remain the same. The 770 should already allow the OP to comfortably run BF4 on high settings at 1080p. A CPU upgrade is the only thing that's going to net him more fps, and I wouldn't upgrade to anything but an Intel platform from an FX-8120.

The FX 8120 should overclock higher than 3.5ghz. What is your motherboard?

My opinion: if you can't overclock any higher, then go to an 8350 and overclock it to 4.5ghz+ and also upgrade your 770 to either a GTX 970 or a R9 290.

Otherwise, just wait and build an Intel rig.

I'd just jump to an 8350 and call it good for now unless you're prepared to buy a new CPU, mobo, and possibly other items. I run an 8350 @ 4.2Ghz with a 660Ti OC 2GB and have no issues on either high or a mix of high/ultra at a solid 60FPS. If I turned down the settings, I'm sure it would be even more FPS though it's really a moot point seeing as I have a 60Hz monitor.

Yeah I'm on a Msi 760gm p-34 fx, so 3.5ghz is the most stable OC I can get. Anything higher than 4.0Ghz is an instant crash in Prime 95, and 3.9Ghz is just barely stable. So I probably have to get a new Mobo anyway for a new FX cpu, or if I go intel. I would get AMD for the cheaper price, I just want 100fps avg in 64 player, Im already playing on all Low. everything else I play is just GPU intensive, not CPU.

I would jump up to the 8350, but do you think it will give me around 100fps avg during intense fights in 64 player with lots of enemies in front of me? I play on 144hz so 90-100fps minimum is important. If the 8350 can do it, then I would just get that.

Agreed, I pretty much get the same avg Fps on high as I do on all low settings that Im playing on right now. But low still gives me greater Minimum Fps so I just stick with that.

There's no point in going for a heavily overclocked FX-8350 when you have to buy a new motherboard, cpu, and cooler anyway. You might as well get an i5, especially since you're running on a 144hz monitor.

That mobo, while being an MSI, isn't likely the best match for what you've already got or an 8350, for that matter. I run an MSI 990FX GD-65 v2 and it's great. That's not to say you should buy this board, but I wanted to at least give you an idea as to what I have.

As for your expected performance, there's no guarantee you're going to hit or sustain the numbers you're speaking to. As I said, I have no issues on a 64 man server, chaos ongoing, while pretty much maintaining a solid 60FPS. I may end up buying a 970 before too long, but I don't really see much point in it seeing that my monitor will be holding me back. The same will go for you. The best you're going to see will be limited to the refresh rate of your monitor no matter how many FPS you're getting since your monitor cant make use of them.

With a 770 SC, you should be seeing 70-90 on HIGH at the very least. If I were you, I'd buy a 144Hz monitor first and then do the other stuff later. If not the monitor, an 8350 with a 990 FX mobo.

Yeah, I guess you're right. If I went intel I could get a $100 motherboard instead of a $150-$200 990fx mobo for the 8350 anyway. Thanks for the help

990 FX boards aren't all that expensive. Going to Intel isn't going to guarantee you better performance, either. It's all in matching up your processor and mobo correctly to ensure the best performance. If you put a high end CPU on a mid grade or low end board, it's not going to perform anywhere close to how it would on a board more suited to it. That's just a general rule.

Bear in mind that Intel is also more expensive. I don't know if that matters to you or not, but it's just another thing to consider.

I appreciate the insight, the 8350 would be pretty good. But like VenBaja said I have to get a new mobo, cpu, ram and a cooler anyway for the 8350. I'll just wait till I have the $ for all the intel parts, thanks for the help. People in BF4 chat had me thinking differently about this lol, glad I got the right info
